Special Court begins hearing on sentences
Staff Reporter
Coimbatore: The Special Court for Bomb Blast cases on Thursday began hearing on sentences in the Coimbatore serial blasts case.
Of the 166 accused facing 220 core charges, the court found eight persons not guilty as charges against them had not been proved. They were granted bail pending recording of acquittal proceedings.
Of the remaining 158, the court held 70 persons guilty of the conspiracy charge and 88 of other minor charges.
The court on Thursday granted bail to seven more persons.
Five more accused held guilty of minor charges have also moved bail applications. Four of them are serving life sentence in other cases, while trial is pending against one in a train blast case.
Counsel’s plea
Akbar Ali, counsel representing those released on bail (from Kerala), including People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Abdul Nasir Maudany, filed a petition before the court seeking to dispense with the personal appearance of those on bail and to allow him to represent them.
The court asked the accused on bail to make their submissions or plea on sentence. Forty of them prayed for award of lesser punishment and also for setting off of the trial period against conviction since they had remained in prison for over nine years.
