GDP no indicator of India’s development, says Kalam

Narsapur (Medak Dt.): Former President Abdul Kalam has said that 9 per cent GDP growth rate is no indicator of prosperity, as economic growth is not reflecting in most of the rural and parts of urban India. Addressing students of BV Raju Institute of Technology here today Dr. Kalam offered his doctrine of National Prosperity Index (NPI) in place of the GDP.

He said that NPI reflects quality of life, economic growth and time tested value systems like joint family. He wished that students of Engineering should initiate a discussion on the parameters that he has enunciated in his NPI.

Calling upon the engineering colleges to churn out leaders who could steer the country to 2020, Kalam asked the students to adopt a nearby village and prepare a project report for its sustainable development. He asked the college to join the Provision of Urban Amenities in Rural Areas (PURA) programme around the college, similar to that of Periarpura of Vallam adopted by Periar College on Engineering in Tamil Nadu.

Answering questions of the Vishnu Public School students here Dr. Kalam said that even though Information Technology has taken over core engineering subjects its convergence with other branches is here to stay. He reminded them that convergence of IT and Nano technology gave birth to Nano Robotics.Earlier Dr. Kalam laid foundation to BVR College of Pharmacy and inaugurated Yellaparagada Subba Rao Auditorium. District Collector B.Venkatesam, Vishnu education society chairman Vishnu Raju and secretary Krishna Ganga Raju were also present. Later Kalam visited the MNR Medical College and inaugurated the state-of-the-art Knowledge center and addressed the medical and nursing students at the auditorium.
