Sundaramoorthy sent to police custody for five days
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: A designated court here has sent Maoist leader V. Sundaramoorthy to police custody for five days. It also permitted the Q Branch to conduct further investigation into the case against him.
The Special Judge for Terrorism and Disruptive (Prevention) Activities Act (TADA), T. Ramasamy, allowing the prosecution plea, said: “I am of the considered view that the interrogation of the accused is necessary to bring out fresh facts, which may help the prosecution to take case in a proper way. Hence, in the interest of justice, it is necessary to pass an order for further investigation.” As for police custody, Mr. Ramasamy said, “Keeping in mind the principles enunciated by the apex court and after hearing the Special Public Prosecutor and counsel for the accused regarding the subject matter, this court comes to the conclusion that there is no prohibition to grant police custody of the accused to a limited period.” The custody, which commences on August 16, shall end on August 20, when the police shall produce the accused in court at 10.30 a.m., the Judge said.
During the custody period, the police shall not ill treat the accused.
