FICCI wants gauge conversion expedited

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry Tamil Nadu State Council has urged the Railway Ministry to expedite the expansion and gauge conversion projects in Tamil Nadu and intensify efforts to convert all metre gauge tracks to broad gauge as done in other States by according priority to the Madurai-Bodi and Manamadurai-Virudhunagar sectors.

In a statement on Thursday, advisor to the FICCI president P.Murari said the FICCI submitted a 32-point agenda to the Railways, including provision of better passenger amenities, security and safety to enhance both freight and passenger traffic.

Priority should be accorded to improving rail connectivity in the southern districts to facilitate their greater economic integration and development. Mr. Murari mooted putting in place a multi-mode system with rail-road-port-air linkages.
