‘Assam killings are acts of frustration’
Special Correspondent
COIMBATORE: The killing of Hindi-speaking people in Assam is an act of frustration by elements whose subversive efforts so far have failed, Union Minister of State for Home Prakash Jaiswal told presspersons here on Thursday.
Participating in a function organised by the Jaiswal Samaj of Coimbatore, the Minister said the Centre had taken a very serious view of the killings. “We will teach them a lesson,” he said, referring to the ULFA. “We have discussed the situation with the State Government. It is also willing to take the measures suggested by the Central Government,” he said. The Minister, however, refused to state what the measures were.
On whether authorities were asked to talk to both the Assamese and the people from other States so that they could trust each other, Mr. Jaiswal indicated that it was not needed as the Assamese in general did not support violence. “This is the problem the ULFA faces. Its acts do not have the support of the people.”
