Nadal, Djokovic crash out

Bhupathi-Murray advance

CINCINNATI: Top-ranked Roger Federer downed French qualifier Julien Benneteau 6-3, 6-3 on Wednesday to cruise into the third round of the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters.

Other top seeds did not fare so well, with No. 2 Rafael Nadal looking nothing like the second-ranked player in the world, and Novak Djokovic, who beat the top three players in the world last week, marked a day of upsets and injuries.

Fighting win

Mahesh Bhupathi and his British partner Jamie Murray fought their way into the second round of the ATP Western & Southern Financial Group Masters after a tough encounter in Cincinnati, United States. The Indo-British pair beat Argentina’s Juan Monaco and Australian Todd Perry 7-6(1), 6-7(5), 10-3.

Meanwhile, Leander Paes and his Czech partner Martin Damm, seeded fourth in the tournament, received a bye in the first round and will now face eighth seeded combination of Sweden’s Simon Aspelin and Julian Knowle of Austria.

China’s Yan Zi upset Ana Ivanovic 6-3, 6-1 on Wednesday and eliminated the defending champion in the second round of the Rogers Cup.
