Chief Minister meets Prime Minister in New Delhi

NEW DELHI: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday with a request for a comprehensive special package of Rs. 8,000 crore for the development of the Telangana region. Briefing mediapersons about this meeting later, the Chief Minister said the Prime Minister promised to examine the request sympathetically.

The special package as envisaged by the State includes Rs. 1,500 crore for agriculture, Rs. 3,000 crore for irrigation, Rs. 1,000 crore for roads, Rs. 500 crore each for rural development and housing, Rs. 200 crore for rural electrification, Rs. 250 crore each for education and health, and Rs. 300 crore for social welfare.

Prior to meeting Dr. Singh, the Chief Minister met Congress president Sonia Gandhi and finalised her Andhra Pradesh tour programme.

As to whether he spoke to Ms. Gandhi about land issues raised by the Left parties, his answer was in the negative. According to him, Ms. Gandhi had been briefed by him earlier on these issues.

The Chief Minister apprised her about the Rajiv Arogya Sree programme involving emergency medical response service, health advisory service and health insurance to poor households.

Meets Ramadoss

Dr. Reddy discussed the Rajiv Arogya Sree programme with Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss.

He sought central assistance for the scheme on the premise that the State would run up a bill of Rs. 100 crore on it in this fiscal and an additional Rs. 600 crore in 2008-09.
