“Involve us in planning committee meetings”

Staff Reporter

In panchayat union and village panchayat level, say ward council members

Disposal of wastes at several villages was not done properly.

Demand to set up a proper burial ground for Sarathupatti village.

THENI: Proper representation must be given to district panchayat ward council members in panchayat union level planning and village panchayat level planning committees as they represented two or more panchayats.

This appeal was made at the district panchayat council meeting held at the collectorate on Friday.

Many members expressed their disgust and anger, as they were not even invited to attend the planning committee meetings.

“We did not know what development works the panchayat unions had taken this year under the All Village Anna Renaissance Scheme,” the members deplored.

Later, members informed the council that disposal of wastes at several villages was not done properly owing to lack of sanitation staff.

The existing staff never evinced any interest in garbage disposal owing to poor wages.

Efforts must be taken to raise their wages, they urged.

With no proper burial ground for Sarathupatti village in Periakulam taluk, people have been using banks of forests streams to bury or burn the dead.

They have been waiting for more than a decade for a burial ground, members charged.

The officials replied that a burial ground would be set up at the village this year.

The members also urged the council to axe electricity charges of the council’s conference hall as the bi-monthly bill crossed Rs.12,000.

Most of the council’s general fund had been drained to meet EB charges alone.

Council funds must be used for implementing development works, they insisted.

Even as the council passed a resolution to collect Rs.1,000, as charges for using the hall by other departments, it was not properly collected, they alleged.

“Council must take steps to collect charges from other departments to meet EB expenses.”

Meanwhile, four members charged that agenda copies were not given to them.

Officials replied that such mistakes would be avoided in future.
