University officials agree to provide facilities after prolonged negotiations

On the war path: Students of Mother Teresa Women’s University picketing road in Kodaikanal on Friday.

KODAIKANAL: More than 400 students of Mother Teresa Women’s University picketed at the main road at Moonjikal junction here on Friday demanding basic amenities and other infrastructure. Traffic was disrupted on this road for an hour.

They strongly condemned the lethargic attitude of the university administration and its abject failure even in providing basic amenities to girl students, mostly hostellers. They alleged that there were no adequate drinking water and toilet facilities in the college and hostel. More over, power shortage owing to poor quality of cables has been haunting the inmates for a long time.

The hostel officials paid least attention to streamline power supply. There was no bus facility between the hostel and college.

The library in the university did not have adequate reference books and not even doors and windows in several classrooms, they alleged. Students also wanted to set up an auditorium, lab, computer facilities, sports ground and other academic infrastructures.

When the university’s Vice-Chancellor T. Janaki attempted to pacify indignant students, they refused to oblige.

Later, the students took out a protest rally in the town and reached the office of the Revenue Divisional Officer for negotiation.

After prolonged negotiations, the University authorities have agreed to take immediate steps to improve drinking water, power and toilet facilities with the available funds. (Periakulam MLA O. Paneerselvam, had already sanctioned Rs.30 lakh from his constituency development fund for taking development works in the University).

They also promised to send proposals to the government for other facilities demanded by them.

Students asked the Vice-Chancellor to give the promises in writing. But Ms. Janaki was reluctant. After insistence by the RDO, she did.
