Hunger strike observed for drinking water scheme
SRIVILLIPUTTUR: Over 800 persons took part in a hunger strike at Watrap near here on Friday, demanding implementation of a drinking water scheme for all the villages in Watrap panchayat union with Pilavakkal dam as source.
The fast, led by the Srivilliputtur MLA, T. Ramasamy, was attended by the Communist Party of India State secretary, D. Pandian.
Addressing the protestors, Mr. Pandian lamented the plight of people who were fighting for drinking water even after 60 years of independence.
“They can wait for days for anything, but not for water,” Mr. Pandian said adding that he would take up the issue with the Chief Minister.
The fast was, however, withdrawn in the afternoon, after Public Works Department officials promised to look into the issue immediately.
