Afforestation drive under way

Green cover: Bamboo seedlings at the forest department nursery in Top Silp, near Pollachi.
POLLACHI: The planting of nearly two lakh seedlings, mostly bamboo, has begun in the all the six ranges of the Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park here.
According to wildlife warden K.R. Varadharaj, bamboo seedlings, a favourite of herbivores, are being planted on 90 hectares while chola species on 35 hectares in the sanctuary.
As there will be no tree felling, all these seedlings will be planted as gap filling across the sanctuary.
Equal distribution
The six ranges, Ulandy, Valparai, Manombolli, Udumalpet, Amaravathi and Pollachi, are getting equal distribution in the plantation. Besides, the favourite of elephants, the planting of bamboo seedlings is proving to be maximum success.
The forest department has nurseries to raise these seedlings in all the six ranges. Mr. Varadharajan said that the planting of seedlings had begun when the region had started receiving monsoon rain and it would be over soon.
