Rehabilitation camps for disabled persons
Staff Reporter
NAMAKKAL: More than 15,000 persons have benefited from the disabled rehabilitation camps conducted in various parts through the District Disabled Rehabilitation Centre last year, Collector G. Sundaramurthi has said.
Participating at the awareness and rehabilitation camp organised for the physically and mentally challenged persons in Government Boys Higher Secondary School in Erumapatti near here on Thursday, the Collector said that the district administration selected 6,500 persons through the rehabilitation camps for providing welfare assistance last year.
Identity cards were distributed to 1,200 physically and mentally challenged people. The administration would conduct similar camp in various parts of the district this year to enable the differently-abled persons to get Government assistance.
He said that the Centre was providing vocational and computer training to the physically challenged persons, who had completed Plus II. It was also assisting the persons to get loans from the banks to take up self-employment activities. Crutches, spectacles, hearing aids, Braille watches, tricycles and artificial limbs were being provided free of cost, he added. Doctors from government hospitals screened the participants of the camp.
