Honour for veteran: M. Ponnavaiko, middle, Vice-Chancellor, Bharathidasan University, greeting freedom fighter ‘Ladapuram’ Gurusamy Naidu in Tiruchi. Registrar V. Radhakrishnan is on left.
TIRUCHI: Facets of the freedom struggle should be a made a necessary part of curriculum to sensitise the younger generation to great sacrifices that have been made to secure the country’s independence, the Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University, M. Ponnavaiko, said on Thursday. Presenting certificates to NSS volunteers, who participated in the ‘Salt Satyagraha Memorial Rally’ from the university to Vedaranyam in Nagapattinam district, Mr. Ponnavaiko said that youngsters could become responsible citizens by knowing the history and culture of the country. The younger generation should rid the country of its evils to reciprocate sacrifices made by freedom fighters. For the masses ignorant of the freedom struggle, the rally served the purpose of spreading awareness, he said, expressing the readiness of the university to include contents on freedom struggle in the curriculum. Only through taking measures to transform the population into human resources can the country rise to a position of an economic superpower even before 2020, he said. Offering felicitations, freedom fighter ‘Ladapuram’ Gurusamy Naidu, a centenarian, explained the ‘do or die’ circumstances under which the Dandi and the Vedaranyam Salt Satyagraha marches took place simultaneously in 1930. New insights
Providing fresh insights into the freedom struggle, he said that even the Western media criticised the high-handed handling of Mahatma Gandhi by the imperialists. The non-violent approach and the conviction of the citizens not to join the British armed forces unnerved them, he said, providing a first hand account of the happenings. Stating that khadi symbolised purity, the centenarian insisted that by resolving to buy at least one khadi dhoti a year, the citizens would be helping thousands of poor families. Endorsing the freedom fighter’s plea, the Registrar, V. Radhakrishnan, observed that people have come to realise the utility of khadi in tropical conditions. The NSS Coordinator of the university, K. Kanagaraju, and the NSS Programme Officer of Periyar EVR College V. Sankaranarayanan, narrated the experiences during the course of the Salt Satyagraha Memorial Rally. Participating volunteers were an inspired lot and the rally taken in the same route that Rajaji took was received with patriotic fervour by the public en route, Mr. Kanagaraju said.
