A small gesture from students

S.S.Kavitha

MADURAI: To help the needy all you need to have is a big heart and little hands.

This was proved by students of Government Girls Higher Secondary School at Mahaboobpalayam.

They collected just a handful of rice each and handed it over to the Family Planning Association of India (FPAI) as part of ‘Comprehensive HIV/AIDS Management Programme (CHAMP)’ at the Independence Day celebrations held at the school on Wednesday.

The CHAMP would rope in students and help them realise their responsibility towards the society in the community intervention programme, said Shyamala Devi, project director.

The FPAI has planned to form block-level positive networks by integrating the HIV infected persons and their family members in Tirumangalam, Tirupparankundram, Vadipatti, Kallupatti, Sedapatti, Chellampatti and Usilampatti blocks.

Students, local body and other elected representatives and various non-governmental and voluntary organisations would collect rice which would be distributed to the positive families, at the rate of five kg per family per month. Health powder and tonics would also be distributed monthly, she said.

The FPAI had also planned to seek the help of other government and private schools for the CHAMP, Ms. Shyamala said.

The scheme was not new for the students as they also donate rice for old-age homes as part of the NSS programmes, said K.A. Jeyalakshmi, Headmistress, while handing over the collected rice to the FPAI.

Such schemes would create a community bonding among students as they would provide a meal to poor families who were overburdened with HIV infection, she said.

“We are happy that we are given a chance to serve the needy,” said C. Sundari, a Plus Two student.
