NEW DELHI: The 60th anniversary of Independence was celebrated with warmth and gaiety at the Indian Research Station ‘Maitri’ in Antarctica and at Ny-Alesund in the Arctic. This is the first time that the event was held in both the Polar regions. While India has been sending scientific expeditions to Antarctica since 1981, an expedition was sent to the Arctic for the first time this year. Minister for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences Kapil Sibal flagged off the expedition on August 3. In the Antarctic, the national flag was hoisted by Station Commander and leader of the 26th Indian Antarctic Scientific Expedition, D. Jayapaul of the Geological Survey of India. The ceremony was held despite darkness all around as it is winter in Antarctica now. A severe blizzard was also blowing over the research station when all 23 members of the expedition got together to celebrate the day. The function was followed by distribution of sweets and a cultural programme. In the Arctic, a five-member team under the leadership of the Director, National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research, Goa, hoisted the tricolour in the Island of Spitbergen, where the scientists are conducting experiments.
