Includes creation of 24 investment regions and industrial areas across six States

NEW DELHI: Ahead of the visit of the Japanese Prime Minister next week, the Union Cabinet on Thursday cleared the setting up of the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (DMICDC) to oversee the project.

The project follows a Memorandum of Understanding between India and Japan signed during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Tokyo in December.

In a joint statement, the two Prime Ministers billed the DMIC – aimed at developing requisite infrastructure and facilitating investment – an important project in the Japan-India Special Economic Partnership Initiative.

The contours of the project include creation of 24 investment regions and industrial areas across six States at an estimated cost of $90-100 billion over 10 years.

In the first phase from 2008 to 2012, six investment regions of over 200 sq km. each will come up: Dadri-Noida-Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, Manesar-Bawal in Haryana, Khushkhera-Biwadi-Neemrana in Rajasthan, Peetampura - Dhar- Mhow in Madhya Pradesh, Bharuch- Dahej in Gujarat and Igatpuri-Nasik-Sinnar in Maharashtra.

A 1,483 km-long dedicated freight corridor, offering high-speed connectivity for High Axle Load Wagons will also come up along the industrial corridor in the first phase.

The industrial areas that will be established during the same time period are: Meerut-Muzaffarnagar in U.P., Faridabad-Palwal in Haryana, Jaipur-Dausa in Rajasthan, Neemach in M.P., Vadodara-Ankleshwar in Gujarat and Alewadi-Dighi in Maharashtra.

New railway lines

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs gave its final approval for funding and execution of six new railway lines and one gauge conversion project.

Announced in this year railway budget, the total bill for these projects is Rs. 2,796 crore.
