This Day That Age
“Let us take a vow to-day that the aim for which the fighters in 1857 sacrificed their lives and for which millions of our people struggled for a hundred years will ever remain in our memory and that we shall maintain the independence and dignity of our country whatever the difficulties,” declared President Rajendra Prasad, presiding over a public meeting held in the capital on August 16 to mark the centenary of the 1857 War of Independence. He said it was unfortunate that in India it had been difficult for the people to stand united which resulted in their stumbling at times. “Now we are free and it is necessary to remember that the most important thing for the country is to maintain its unity.” Vice-President Radhakrishnan, Chairman of the National Committee for the 1857 Centenary Celebrations, said the country should take inspiration “not only from the great leaders who are known by their name and fame but also the countless men and women, who dreamed, fought, struggled and died for the sake of the freedom of the country.”
