PANAJI: Former Speaker and Chief Minister Francisco Sardinha was on Thursday appointed the new president of Goa Pradesh Congress Committee by the AICC. Mr. Sardinha will takeover from Ravi Naik, who joined the State Government after the recent Assembly polls as the Home Minister, on August 25, sources in the Congress here said. Mr. Sardinha was defeated in his home constituency of Curtorim by Reginaldo Lourenco of Save Goa Front in the June 2 Assembly elections. He is a senior Congress leader from south-Goa, who first became a Minister in a Congress Government which first came to power in 1980 and had a stint as a Member of Parliament in mid-90s when he defeated Mr. Churchill Alemao who was then heading the regional outfit - UGDP. In November 1999, Mr. Sardinha rebelled from the Congress and became the Chief Minister by splitting the Congress and joining hands with the BJP.
