JAMSHEDPUR: There were upsets aplenty on the opening day of the three-day Tata Steel fourth National-ranking archery tournament at the JRD Sports Complex here on Friday. Some of the big names that once ruled Indian archery failed to make the cut after two rounds of the 70m competition were gone through on a cloudy but sultry day. The withdrawal of Tarundeep Rai from the competition owing to poor form and stress saved him the blushes. But his Services teammate Somai Murmu was not as lucky. Murmu, who was part of the team that failed to earn the Olympic quota places at Leipzig World championship in July, finished 17th overall and missed the cut by one place. The top 16 men and best eight women in both recurve and compound categories survived the cut. Among the men, some of the celebrated ones to go out early were Majhi Sawaiyan of Services (643, 20th), Vishwash of Services (643, 21st), Priyank of Mittal Champions Trust (MCT) (640, 23rd) and Gurucharan Besra of Services (633, 31st). The surprises include three juniors — Adonde Raju of Steel Plant Sports Board (665, 3rd), Somnath Mondal of Bengal (659, 8th) and Rajib Basumatary of SPSB (659, 10th). Rahul Banerjee topped the men’s recurve by getting a world class score of 343 out of 360 points in the first 70m and collected 331 in the second to log 674 points. Jayanta Talukdar, the other who was tipped to make it to the Indian team for the Asian championship, slumped to 10th with a total of 659. He would have to raise his game a couple of notches on Saturday to remain in the fray for an India berth. In the women’s recurve, Dola Banerjee of Railways dominated with a total of 668 points.
