Special Correspondent

In coastal Karukalacherry village

10 acres of land to be ‘greened’

SHGs to maintain plantation

Villagers to earn Rs.1.35 lakh an acre

KARAIKAL: The Centre for Environment Education (CEE), supported by the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests, has launched a coastal afforestation programme in Karukalacherry village of Karaikal district in the Union Territory of Puducherry.

A. Sampath Kumar, Project Associate, CEE-Karaikal, told The Hindu on Thursday that the village’s fishing community started the plantation activities on August 15..

The village panchayat members, land owners and women from local self-help groups mutually consented to raise casuarina plantation and maintain them.

He said R. Shailaja, Regional Director, CEE-Bangalore, and Shriji Kurup, Programme Officer, CEE-Karaikal, extended technical and financial aid.

About 10 acres of land were “greened” with casuarina saplings, with 4,000 saplings planted per acre.

CEE support

While the CEE supported fencing, digging of farm pond, labour and saplings and their maintenance, the SHGs would maintain the plantations.

The beneficiaries could earn Rs.1.35 lakh per acre by the end of the fourth year. They would also raise another set of plantation by themselves.

The fishing community were briefed about the economic benefits and ecological gain that could be achieved through the afforestation programme, Mr. Sampath Kumar said.

“Green shield”

It also provided a “green shield” to protect the coastal village from natural disasters such as cyclone, tsunami and floods.

The CEE had raised a well-equipped satellite nursery at Jawahar Navodaya School with support from the school management to ensure a continuous supply of casuarina, cashew, neem and mangrove saplings.
