Regional science expo – a hotbed of ideas

Young minds: Students evince interest in an exhibit on bio-gas plant at a science expo on at Kendriya Vidyalaya in Madambakkam on Friday.
TAMBARAM: The lush green and serene campus of the Kendriya Vidyalaya school in Madambakkam, near Tambaram, is playing host to a two-day regional science expo for students of 57 Kendriya Vidyalaya institutions in the Chennai region from Friday.
The event had young minds drafting their own vision for a cleaner environment, a hunger-free society and a better world to live in.
Students from 55 of the 57 Kendriya Vidyalayas of the Chennai region – comprising Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry - are competing in the event. There are 330 exhibits designed by students under six themes - water management, food and agriculture, disaster management, energy resources, mathematical modelling and educational technologies. Three exhibits from each theme will be selected. Madras Christian College principal V.J. Philip inaugurated the event.
The school principal, M. Vellaichamy, said Kendriya Vidyalaya Sanghatan organised school-level science and quiz competitions every year. Winners at the school level will compete at the regional level events and subsequently at the National level. Giving flight to their creativity, students touched upon some crucial problems relating to water supply, food and agriculture, and new forms of non-conventional energy among others.
