TWO MUCH: Megan Fox and Shia LaBeouf in ‘Transformers’.
Film: Transformers Cast: Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox Director: Michael Bay Hollywood continues to capitalise on calamities, real or imagined. In such a conducive atmosphere, aliens have found themselves perfectly at home. Director Michael Bay’s film is yet another instance of technology-driven fear. No, there are no mammoth mammals or predators that come revisiting the planter they left aeons ago. Instead, the fear factor comes in the form of robots, whose tentac les are long and strong enough to gobble up everything that comes their way. So, they smash cars, burn trees, demolish houses. All for a key that a young boy has. The key that means the difference between the earth seeing another day or being reduced to a collateral damage in “their war”. Released in English as well as dubbed Hindi version, the national language version comes replete with some earthy humour, the kind of dialogues which seem inappropriate for the film’s characters, but still manage to ring a bell with the less discerning cinemagoers. For more than a brief while here, two parallel stories run: the boy is bought his first car by his dad, he is fascinated with his college mate, and the like. The other is focussed on Qatar, beautiful in its desert expanse, where an American contingent is attacked by unknown forces. And even the President’s computer attacked by a mysterious virus. Of course, the two do meet and we realise that far away from our planet on Cybertron, a war was being waged between the noble Autobots and the nefarious Decepticons for controlling a talisman that would impart unlimited power to the owner. The talisman has reached the earth, and… It is an interesting premise. And the film holds interest, thanks to some slick editing, brisk pace. And a nice juggling of the two plots with a mix of emotion and special effects. Take it as a one-time watch. Just don’t go looking for too much novelty or profundity. You won’t be disappointed.
