Punishment waived off
Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI: The Jawaharlal Nehru University administration on Friday revoked the fines imposed on students’ union president Dhananjay Tripathi and joint secretary Jyotsana Singh, allowing them to register for their courses. “Dhananjay submitted a letter to Vice-Chancellor B. B. Bhattacharya on behalf of the two on Thursday morning appealing to him to reconsider the punishment handed out to them. On the basis of this letter, the University decided to waive off their penalties. They can now register,” said Proctor H. B. Bohidar.
Soon after this development, three students called off their hunger strike that began on Friday morning in protest against the administration’s decision to commute the rustication order of eight students to fines and retain the punishment imposed on president and joint secretary. Last week the administration had commuted the punishments issued against some students for illegally confining Registrar Avais Ahmad in his staff car earlier this year.
