Rain lashes suburbs; man electrocuted
Special Correspondent
TAMBARAM: A 22-year-old youth was electrocuted here on Friday evening. Mahendran, of Devanesan Nagar in Peerkankaranai was working as a lorry cleaner and near his office on Grand Southern Trunk Road in West Tambaram, he was attending to his vehicle. Around 6.30 p.m., a low-tension wire snapped and fell on the road.
Mahendran came into contact with it and was killed on the spot. Though residents alerted the Tambaram police and officials of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, power supply was not severed for about 15 minutes after the accident. His body was later removed to the Chromepet GH for post-mortem.
On Friday evening, sharp showers accompanied by strong winds lashed many places in the southern suburbs of Chennai.
This resulted in transformers getting burst in many places.
West Tambaram was plunged into darkness for over an hour.
Traffic snarls
Traffic on the arterial GST Road and Velachery Main Road moved at a snail’s pace as rain water flooded them.
Earlier in the morning, traffic on arterial roads in the southern suburbs of Chennai was thrown out of gear. Overnight rains were an important reason for the problems. Rainfall level measured on Friday morning was 31 mm.
At Tambaram, the limited use subway for two-wheelers and cars was inundated and vehicles were unable to use this facility.
