TIRUPUR: Fair price shops run by the cooperative department in Tirupur have to bear the brunt of high rentals in Tirupur. “We can find a concrete building with 400 sq ft at a monthly rent of Rs. 1,000 in Coimbatore city. But the same costs us around Rs. 4, 000 a month here,” said a senior official.

Of the 64 fair price shops run by the Tirupur Consumer Cooperative Wholesale Society (TCCWS, 48 have been functioning in private buildings. With the Government ordering 20 more shops in Tirupur town , the authorities find it difficult to locate buildings.

Official sources say that the building owners are already demanding an increase in rent and many of them are asking the officials to vacate their buildings. TCCWS does not make profits and sometimes incurs losses owing to the huge rents, the officials say.

The issue was discussed at the special review meeting of the public distribution system by Minister for Food E.V. Velu recently. Mr. Velu ordered that only 10 out of 20 shops sanctioned by the Government would be opened now. Once these shops moved to buildings constructed by the Government, another 10 shops would be opened in the town.. While the local MLA C. Govindasamy promised the officials to mobilise sponsors to construct shops, he asked them to find suitable places. Collector Neeraj Mittal ordered the revenue and municipal officials to remove encroachments in reserved sites across the town and make sites available to construct these buildings.
