Mahadeva Prasad calls on Ambika Soni

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Minister for Kannada and Culture H.S. Mahadeva Prasad called on Union Minister for Tourism and Culture, Ambika Soni, here on Friday and called for urgent action to confer classical language status on Kannada.

Pointing out that the expert committee constituted by the State Government had already provided documents to prove the antiquity of Kannada, he said the Government and the people of the State were eagerly awaiting a declaration from the Union Government conferring the status of classical language on Kannada, particularly as the State was celebrating the golden jubilee of its formation this year.

Ms. Soni is reported to have told Mr. Prasad that her Ministry was awaiting the report of the Committee of Linguistic Experts set up by the Centre to examine the issue and assured that immediate action would be taken on receipt of the report. He called on Union Minister for Rural Development Raghuvansh Prasad Singh.
