KOLKATA: A demand for the deportation of Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasrin within a month for allegedly “insulting the Prophet” in her writings was made by Imam Syed Mohd. Barkati of the Tippu Sultan mosque here on Friday. “The situation is such that she will be eliminated” if the Government does not take the necessary action, Majidullah Khan Farahat, spokesperson of the Majlis-e-Bachao Tehrique, Hyderabad, added. They were addressing a congregation organised by the Majlis-e-Shoora, Tippu Sultan Shahi Masjid — a religious organisation of city intellectuals. “The West Bengal Government which has provided her shelter here will be responsible in the event of the demand not being met within the deadline. A reward will be given to any individual who can ensure her deportation and a reception to the government if it can arrange for it,” the Imam later told The Hindu. Asked to react to the developments, Ms. Nasrin said that she hoped “good sense would prevail and the fatwa issued against me withdrawn. This is a democracy and everyone has the right to freedom of expression. But issuing a fatwa against anyone is not proper.” The Imam, however, denied that “any fatwa had been issued” and said that what had been raised “was a demand.” Ms. Nasrin was attacked by MIM activists at the Hyderabad Press Club on August 9. Her deportation is necessary for the sake of “maintaining communal harmony in the country,” he said. “Taslima Nasrin, through her writings, has hurt the sentiments of the Muslim community,” he added.
