CHENNAI: Abhinav Mukund’s 92 and his partnership of 158 with K. Sree Vasudevadas (83, 145b, 1x6, 8x4), and then a last gasp partnership for the 10th wicket helped Tamil Nadu snatch a lead of 33 in its Buchi Babu all-India invitation tournament match against Assam at the M.A. Chidambaram stadium on Friday. At the end of the second day’s play, Assam, in its second innings, was 63 for three in 16 overs. After Abhinav and Vasudevadas had set the foundation, Tamil Nadu collapsed from 190 for three to 218 for nine, and looked in danger of falling short of Assam’s first innings total of 235. But last man S. Samuel hung in and contributed six to a partnership of 50, put on with C. Ganapathy (48 not out, 63b, 1x6, 6x4), to save Tamil Nadu some bother. For Assam, right-arm off-spinner Arlen Kanowar took four for 79. In other matches, Baroda beat Tripura by an innings and 69 runs, while Mumbai’s margin over KSCA was an innings and 85.
