MALAPPURAM: R. Surendran, Gandhian and professor of Hindi at Calicut University, observed a day-long fast in front of the university administrative office building at Tenhipalam on Saturday in protest against the faux pas committed by the university authorities by hoisting the national flag upside down on Independence Day. The university constituted a committee, comprising Syndicate member K.P. Janardhanan and the former head of the Department of Commerce and Management Studies K.P. Muraleedharan, to inquire into the goof-up. Prof. Surendran launched the satyagraha claiming that none of the committee members had attended the Independence Day ceremony in which Vice-Chancellor Anwar Jahan Zuberi hoisted the Tricolour upside down. Soon after the incident, Prof. Zuberi tendered an apology for the faux pas and said that it was an inadvertent mistake. Prof. Zuberi said the university would ensure that such goof-ups did not recur. Prof. Surendran threatened to go on a hunger strike on August 24 if the university failed to initiate action against those responsible for the goof-up. He said neither the Vice-Chancellor nor the Registrar was technically responsible for the incident.
