Will help council engage services of lawyers

Says the Government will consult the PCB

Promises financial aid to Perumatty panchayat

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has assured the Plachimada Action Council and the Solidarity Council that the Government would offer all support to their legal battle against Coca-Cola, a Solidarity Council release said here on Saturday.

At a meeting here with representatives of the two councils, Mr. Achuthanandan said the Government would help them to engage the services of eminent lawyers to argue their case before the Supreme Court.

He also offered to consult the Kerala State Pollution Control Board to see if a case could be registered against the company for pollution of the neighbourhood in the Perumatty panchayat where the factory was located.

The Chief Minister promised to provide financial assistance to the Perumatty panchayat to fight its court case against the cola company and take follow-up action under the Kerala Groundwater Act 2002 under which Plachimada had been notified ‘overexploited area’, the release said.

The Plachimada Action Council was represented at the meeting by Vilayodi Venugopal and Thankamani and the Solidarity Council by convener R. Ajayan, Perumatty grama panchayat member A. Krishnan, district panchayat president Subaida, member Chellakkuttan and Collector Sreenivasan.
