MDMK to boycott local body polls

CHENNAI: The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam will boycott byelections to vacancies in various local bodies in the State, scheduled for September 5.

MDMK general secretary Vaiko, in a statement here on Saturday, said in the recently-concluded local body elections, the State Election Commission had failed to control violence in the State, especially in Chennai Corporation.

As the party felt that there would not be free and fair byelections as long as the present State Election Commissioner remained in the post, it decided to boycott the elections.
