Livestock census to begin on September 14

Animal Husbandry Department to conduct census

Masters training programme has begun

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The 18th round of livestock census will begin in the State on September 14.

The census would continue till October 14, Animal Husbandry Department officials said. The State was following the national-level time-table fixed for the census, they told The Hindu here.

Elaborate arrangements are being made for the smooth conduct of the census, which is expected to generate data for planning development projects in the animal husbandry sector.

The quinquennial census is a Centrally-funded project and will be carried out in all States simultaneously.

The Union Government has fixed October 15 as the base date for the census. The last census was held across the country in 2002, but it could be conducted in Kerala only in 2003 owing to technical reasons.

The Animal Husbandry Department has been selected as the implementing agency for conducting the census in the State. The statistical wing of the department will provide the technical input.

The officials said the masters training programme for the project had begun. Pro formas for collecting ward-level data had also been prepared. As per a Central norm, one enumerator would be required to complete data collection on livestock from 900 households, the department officials said. There are around 77 lakh households in the State.

“So, we will require nearly 8,500 enumerators to complete the livestock census in the State. We are thinking of recruiting Vocational Higher Secondary School students who have taken animal husbandry as their specialisation area to work as enumerators on a temporary basis. If such candidates are not available in any area, students who have completed Plus Two will be recruited for the process.
