Signatures of over a crore customers to be collected Demand for more rural branches
KOCHI: The All-India Bank Employees Association and All-India Bank Officers Association, which have launched a campaign against the Centre’s banking policy, plan to present a mass petition with signatures of more than one crore bank customers to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on August 31. This is in support of their demands such as opening of more branches in rural areas, increasing interest rates on small savings deposits, providing more loans for agriculture, small and medium industry, employment-generation projects, rural development, poverty alleviation and self-help groups. Association leaders said that steps should be taken to recover bad loans and Non-Performing Assets expeditiously through stringent measures. Wilful default on loans should be made a criminal offence and a list of such defaulters should be published by the Government and Reserve Bank of India. Other demands made by the association are, not allowing unrestricted entry of foreign capital to Indian banks, preventing outsourcing of normal banking services, reviewing and reducing service charges in banks for common people, and restructuring and revitalising Cooperative Banks and Regional Rural Banks.
