Hospitality industry meet opens on August 23
Indrani Dutta
KOLKATA: Railway Minister Lalu Prasad will address hoteliers at the country’s first summit of the hospitality industry to be held in New Delhi from August 23.
The managing director of the International Hotel Management Institute, Switzerland and the country’s top hoteliers are expected to participate.
The Railway Minister is slated to give a talk on “ Lessons from a Moving Train” spelling out his now famous management tips on how the turnaround of the Indian Railways was achieved.
Union Tourism Minister Ambika Soni has been invited to inaugurate the two-day workshop to share her vision of the future growth of the tourism and hospitality industry. She has already said that ahead of the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in 2010, India faced a huge shortage of rooms in all categories. The Centre was now encouraging the bed-and-breakfast model for bridging this gap and the Minister said that housewives will have to be trained to play a professional hostess, while the house-owners will have to keep abreast on international hygiene norms. The Tourism Ministry sources said that an ordinance would soon be promulgated to allow these house owners to enjoy domestic rates for water and electricity.
