Dancing feet: Children from different schools taking part in ’Vande Mataram’, a patriotic cultural programme in Berhampur on Friday night.
BERHAMPUR: A patriotic cultural show ‘Vande Mataram’ enthralled the audience on Friday night. This show was organised at an open-air stage at Shree Towers in the city by ‘Abhinaya Jagat’, a magazine devoted to theatre and other stage performances in Orissa. Member of the editorial board of the magazine Mihir Tripathy and Jaganmohan Mohapatra said it was an effort to bring together all cultural talents of the city irrespective of age to enliven the spirit of patriotism. The cultural troupes participated in the show included a large number of pre-school children who were performing on a stage for the first time. Felicitated
The show started with the honouring of Orissa Sangeet Natak Akademi award winner stage artiste Sundarmani Devi, who is now living a desolate life at an old age home at Gopalpur. Ms Devi thanked the tiny tots for keeping alive the stage tradition despite the advent of modern mediums of entertainment. The highlight of the show was candle dance by Rakesh Chandra Panigrahy of Purushottampur. He used Odissi form to perform ‘Tandav’ to the tune of a patriotic song with lighted candles in hand from which he was pouring molten wax all over his body. A short dance drama on the life of martyr Mangal Pandey by the pre-school children of Creams dance group made the audience ponder over the fact that even small children can perform keeping in mind the tenets of stage performance. A patriotic ballad performed by the Odissi troupe of Kelucharan Kalatirtha institute brought much accolades from the audience. As interlude many veteran singers of the city could not restrain from singing patriotic songs during this cultural show. Berhampur University Vice-Chancellor Bijay Sahu and Berhampur MLA R.C.C.Patnaik attended the function.
