DAVANGERE: The Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) has opposed the “arrears collection drive” launched by Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd (KPTCL) and alleged that KPTCL officials were forcibly collecting arrears of electricity bills from farmers in distress. Disconnected
Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, Veera Sangaiah, vice-president of the sangha and Maheshwaraswamy, general secretary, said Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd had disconnected power supply in many villages in Davangere, Bellary and other districts during the drive. Managing Director of Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd Bharath Lal Meena had ordered executive engineers, assistant engineers and section officers of electricity supply companies to resign from their posts or collect arrears, they alleged. They said while Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy stated that he would initiate steps to improve the economic condition of farmers in distress, Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd forcibly collected arrears from farmers. They sought know if this was the right time to collect arrears when farmers were in distress owing to crop loss.
