Government staff in the areas told not to go on leave

BHUBANESWAR: The Orissa Government on Saturday alerted all Collectors of five northern districts and revenue divisional commissioner to stay prepared to meet emergency situation that might arise out of heavy rains under influence of a low pressure area over Bay of Bengal.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Nikunja K Sundaray said the low pressure area could hit five northern districts such as Balasore, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Jajpur and Bhadrak.

He said government employees working in these districts were warned not to go on leave if flood situation arose during next couple of days. The SRC said food materials had been stocked for three days to carry out relief operation. Orissa Disaster Rapid Action Force was also put on alert.

Local meteorological department sources said under the influence of upper air cyclonic circulation over Gangetic West Bengal and neighbourhood a low pressure areas had formed over North Bay and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal and neighbourhood.

The associated upper air cyclonic circulation extended up to mid-tropospheric level tilting South West wards with height and the system was likely to be more marked, the met office said.

While heavy to very heavy rainfall occurred at isolated places over Subarnarekha, heavy rainfall occurred at a few places over Subarnarekha and at isolated places over Burhabalanga catchments.

Burhabalanga, Subarnarekha and Baitarani were the three rivers, which could swell in the event of heavy rains, Mr. Sundaray said.

During the first spell of flood, several deaths were reported from Balasore, Bhadrak, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts.
