Bandh peaceful in Pudukottai

Staff Reporter

PUDUKOTTAI: The dawn-to-dusk bandh, demanding the restoration of status quo for the Pudukottai Parliamentary segment by the Delimitation Commission, went off peacefully in the district on Saturday. The United Progressive Alliance, traders associations and other organisations gave the bandh call.

Traders downed their shutters. Autorickshaws, lorries and buses were off the road. Essential services remained unaffected. No untoward incident was reported.

The Commission, in its recent re-drawing of parliamentary seats, abolished the Pudukottai parliamentary segment and apportioned all six Assembly seats in the district to four other Lok Sabha constituencies — Tiruchi, Sivagangai, Ramanathapuram and Karur.

Political leaders, led by Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests S. Regupathi, gathered in front of the bus stand here. Alankudi CPI MLA S. Rajasekaran, district Congress president T. Pushparaj, district CPI(M) secretary M. Chinnadurai were among those who were present. Rajya Sabha member S. Thirunavukkarasar, accompanied by his supporters, sat for a while on the main road opposite to the bus stand to express their support to the agitation.

Mr. Regupathi said the bandh was directed neither against the State Government nor the Centre, but to draw the Election Commission’s attention to their demand. All steps would be taken to retain the status quo for the parliamentary segment.
