Fatwa against Taslima condemned

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Reacting to the fresh fatwa (edict) issued by the Shahi Imam of the Tipu Sultan Mosque against Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasrin, the All-India Progressive Women’s Association (AIPWA) has said that by issuing death threats against the feminist writer, a certain section of the fundamentalists in the minority community was playing into the hands of the Hindutva fundamentalists.

In a statement here on Saturday, the association general secretary, Kumudini Pati, said that in a democracy every person had the right to hold her or his views and express them freely. Taslima had done only that as she is critical of the hypocrisy and double standards of all religions towards women.

Ms. Pati said the Andhra Pradesh Government, by not acting immediately against the attackers after the incident at Hyderabad and rather lodging an FIR against Taslima, had emboldened the fundamentalists of all hues and now the threat to Taslima’s life had become real.

The association impressed upon the Government to grant the writer citizenship in India and allow her to live in Kolkata with security. It called upon all women’s organisations and progressive people to stand in support of Taslima because silence on their part would weaken the fight against fundamentalists of all hues.
