TIRUCHI: Educational institutions have the responsibility to educate students on adherence to road rules and sensitise them about discipline on roads, the Inspector General of Police, Central Zone, I. Raja, said on Saturday. Awareness of road safety and traffic rules has become important in today’s context and the message was being percolated among the student community in a sustained manner, he said while speaking at the valedictory function of Tiruchi Schools Road Safety Patrol Unit here. Safety on roads was a major concern for the administrators and those executing the orders of the Government, he said adding that one of the ways of inculcating road safety awareness was through educating the public. The City Police and the Tamil Nadu Police Traffic Warden (TPTW), Tiruchi Division had been conducting programmes for school students with a view to creating awareness among them on road safety and road rules, he observed. He distributed prizes to school students who emerged winners in the elocution, drawing, painting and quiz competitions conducted over a period of two months on the theme road safety. Over 250 students from 17 city schools took part in the competitions. The shield for overall best Road Safety Patrol Unit was presented to R.C. Higher Secondary School, Tiruchi. The Commissioner of Police Shankar Jiwal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) A. Kaliyamoorthy, Chief Educational Officer, Tiruchi R. Muthukrishnan, Additional Superintendent of Police (Traffic) S. Manickavasagam and R. Manoharan, Chief Traffic Warden, Tamil Nadu Police Traffic Warden, Tiruchi Division and members of TPTW participated.
