Bangalore: It was a walk to reduce the pain of hundreds of haemophiliacs in the country. Hundreds of people from various walks of life joined in support of the Haemophilia Federation (India) and took part in the “Bangalore Walkathon” organised in aid of the federation here on Saturday morning. While people suffering from haemophilia cheered the participants, their relatives and friends, along with schoolchildren and sports personalities, took part in the walkathon. It was flagged off by Minister of Science and Technology Ramachandra Gowda. The highlight of the event was the presence of sports personalities including Sadanand Vishwanath, Vasanth Bharadwaj, Archana Popat, Ashish Ballal, Vijay Bharadwaj, Nisha Millet and Sujit Somasunder. The walkathon was organised with the aim of creating awareness about hardships faced by people with haemophilia and raising resources to fund their treatment. Haemophilia is a life-long disorder, in which the afflicted person’s blood does not clot because of deficiency or absence of blood clotting factors (proteins). People with haemophilia tend to bleed internally or externally even with a minor injury. Transfusion of human blood product known as Anti-Haemophilic Factor (AHF) is the only treatment for the disorder.
