Chain-snatcher plays new trick Crime notes

BANGALORE: A man snatched a gold chain worth Rs. 60,000 from a woman after setting on fire a window mesh at her house in Peenya police station limits in the early hours of Saturday.

The police said that around 2.45 a.m., a man had burnt the plastic window mesh at Jyothi’s house in 4th Block, HMT Layout. Jyothi, who woke up smelling burnt plastic, had peeped through the window and the man had snatched her gold chain and run away, the police said. The Peenya police have registered a case.

Dies in accident

A call centre executive was killed after the motorcycle on which she was riding pillion with her colleague rammed a median on Victoria Road, near India Garage, in Viveknagar police station limits around 9.30 p.m. on Friday. The police said Ammu Mohan (25), who had suffered serious injuries, was rushed to HOSMAT hospital and was declared brought dead.

She was working in a call centre on Bannerghatta Road.

Burglary

Thieves broke open a furniture showroom on Hosur Road on Friday night and made away with Rs. 60,000.

The police said the incident had come to light around 10 a.m. on Saturday when the employees had turned up for work. On a complaint by showroom manager Krishna Kumar Singh, the MICO Layout police registered a case.

In another incident, burglars struck at a software engineer’s house in Vijaya Bank Colony on Bannerghatta Road and made away with valuables.

Crocodile skin seized

The Cottonpet police arrested four persons and seized from them two crocodile skins, together estimated at Rs. 8 lakh.

The police gave the names of the arrested as Syed Yasin (36) of Bangalore, Ashar Isaac (23) of Mangalore, and Jaipal (27) and Dharman (29), both from Hosur in Tamil Nadu. The police said that Jaipal, Dharman and their two accomplices Anthony and Ranga, who were at large, had killed the crocodiles at the Hogenekkal Falls. The four were arrested while they were trying to sell the skin near Shanthala Silk House Circle, the police said. The Cottonpet police have registered a case against them under the Wildlife Protection Act and the Indian Penal Code.

Suicide

Nagaveni (22) committed suicide by setting herself ablaze at her house in Audugodi police station limits on Saturday. The police said she had taken the step for she did not like the marriage fixed for her.
