This Day That Age
A memorial column was on August 16 unveiled at the military barracks at Barrackpore, near Calcutta, where Mangal Pande, who fired the first shot of the 1857 War of Independence, was hanged. A mute witness to the day’s event was the century-old banyan tree on which Mangal Pande was hanged. The large crowd present bowed in silent reverence as the column was unveiled within sight of the banyan tree. The inscription on the column runs: “Here was fired the first shot during the movement of 1857.” Sepoy Mangal Pande rose in revolt over the greased cartridge issue at the Berhampore north barracks and shot a British officer. Jamadar Iswari Pande was ordered by the commanding officer to arrest Mangal Pande, but he refused. Both were then disarmed, taken into custody and hanged.
