Maken meets RWA officials of illegal colonies

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Union Urban Development Minister Ajay Maken has said that the development of unauthorised colonies was a vital step in Delhi’s quest of being viewed as a global city.

Addressing a gathering of residents’ welfare association functionaries from the 1500-odd unauthorised colonies in the city here on Sunday, Mr. Maken said unauthorised colonies were a “part and parcel of the economic growth of the region”.

The Minister said Delhi was dependent on these colonies for the large number of people who worked in the service industry. The colonies had to be developed with regards to roads, power supply and sanitation and their residents had to be given a healthy and beautiful environment to live in.

Mr. Maken said the regularisation order passed by the Government on February 8 this year was the first in a series of processes that needed to be carried out for the uplift of unauthorised colonies.

Regularisation apart, the Government also has to spend a large sum of money to work towards the welfare of people staying in such localities.
