Varsity bid to rein in students from spending money

Candidates will have furnish details within ten days of declaration of result

If they do not do so within 10 days, their election would stand cancelled

NEW DELHI: In what could perhaps be the first step to rein in students from spending huge sums of money on elections to the Delhi University Students’ Union, the authorities have now come up with a new rule whereby the elected candidates will have to give an audit account of how they have spent Rs.10,000 within ten days of declaration of result.

So far the University has been criticised for not having been able to come up with a mechanism to ensure that students complying with the Rs.10,000 expenditure limit.

“As per the code of conduct that has been signed and will be released on Monday, every candidate elected to the office as well as the Central Council of DUSU will be required to give an audited account of Rs.10,000 within 10 days of the declaration of the result. This is a new thing that has been added this year,” said a University official on Saturday.

The Election Advisory Committee – headed by Pro-Vice- Chancellor S. K. Tandon -- that met this past week has also approved of a penalty for those candidates who fail to do so. “If they do not do so within 10 days, their election would stand cancelled,” asserted the official.

Besides, the ban on use of posters will continue.

“By and large, we have stuck to the Supreme Court order on implementation of the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations on the conduct of students’ union elections in universities and affiliated colleges. There is no getting away from that. It is binding on us and we will abide by it,” said Gurmeet Singh, Chief Election Officer of DUSU.
