‘Booklet on social welfare schemes soon’

MANCHI (Bantwal taluk): The Department of Social Welfare will shortly bring out a booklet on various schemes of the Government for the benefit of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe people, commissioner of Social Welfare Department, Baburao Mudabi, has said. The booklet will contain information on legal recourse available to these communities in case of harassment, he added. Inaugurating a half-day legal awareness and assistance camp organised by Dakshina Kannada District Legal Services Authority, Mangalore Bar Association and Department of Social Welfare here on Sunday,

Mr. Mudabi said although there were routine and special legislations to safeguard the interests of these communities, they were not benefiting owing to lack of awareness.Although the number of cases of atrocity on SC/ST people was less in Karnataka, a lot more needs to be done to give them a right to lead a dignified life. One of the means that the Government is adopting is to take the information, education and communication route to spread the message among the people and empower them to legally fight oppression and injustice, he said.

Referring to the camp, Mr. Mudabi said he would instruct the officials to organise such camps in other districts and work towards empowering the weaker and vulnerable sections. D.S. Shinde, third Additional District and Session’s Judge presided over the function.

A.K. Monappa, Commissioner, Department of Public Instruction, Dharwad, A.M. Kunjappa, CEO, Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat, and others were present.
