Agricultural education

Sir, — Agricultural education is given step-motherly treatment by the Government during the last 60 years. India lives in its villages.

To uplift the poor, we must fight against ignorance. Agriculture universities should set up a network of institutions to spread agriculture and allied fields such as dairy and poultry farming.

Only then will the villagers utilise the modern technology and reap benefits thereof.

Tampered auto fare meters

Sir, — Senior citizens residing in the city are inconvenienced by variations seen in the fares of a number of old autorickshaws plying on the roads.

This is ostensibly due to drivers tampering with the meters in their vehicles. While some autorickshaw drivers reconcile to acceptable fares, many of them are rude and demand fares in excess of what is reasonable. Officials at the Regional Transport Office should take immediate action in this regard.

Land recovery

Sir, — The efforts of the Bangalore Development Authority in recovering encroached land worth Rs. 39 lakh in the Wilson Garden area, apart from demolishing unauthorised sheds that had come up at BDA commercial site No 36, in the same area, are commendable. Connivance between officials and elected representatives seems obvious. Those found guilty of dereliction of duty and violation of rules should be punished.
