TIRUCHI: Bharathidasan University will utilise the services of retired college teachers for executing non-academic-oriented developmental projects, its Vice-Chancellor M. Ponnavaiko said. Inaugurating the State conference of the Tamil Nadu Retired College Teachers’ Association here on Saturday, Dr. Ponnavaiko said that the University needed experienced advisors and academicians for executing various non-academic programmes, such as provision of additional infrastructural facilities like expansion of campus. The University would take due advantage of the services of retired teachers so that their rich experience could be well utilised. This decision formed part of the university’s drive for optimal utilisation of human resources. He clarified that the nomination of retired teachers as advisors or members in some committee or other would not create any ripples among the in-service college teachers. “The services are purely required for non-academic purposes, as the retired teachers will not handle any classes; nor they are appointed against any vacancy,” the Vice-Chancellor said. As all the universities across the State found it difficult to nominate advisors, Dr. Ponnavaiko called upon the Association’s office-bearers to submit to him a list of the names of retired teachers interested to offer their advisory or consultancy service to the university nearest to their home-towns. The State president of the Association M. Chakkarapani said the Association would soon collect the details from the interested retired teachers. The general secretary of the Andhra Pradesh Retired College Teachers Association, K. T. Venkatacharyulu, who released a souvenir, said that there was a strong case for floating south-India level association of retired college teachers. Different States adopted various strategy while redressing the retired teachers’ grievances. The general secretary of Tamil Nadu Retired College Teachers Association D. Thomas was among those who spoke.
