Tiwari to take charge in 2 days

HYDERABAD: After a gap of 19 months, the State will have a full time Governor with the appointment of the veteran Congress leader and former Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Narayan Dutt Tiwari, to the post.

He is likely to assume charge in the next two days. Mr. Tiwari relieves Orissa Governor Rameshwar Thakur, who was holding additional charge of Andhra Pradesh since January 2006.

The post fell vacant following the induction of then Governor Sushil Kumar Shinde into the Union Cabinet. Mr.Thakur has now been shifted to Karnataka as Governor.

Eighty-two-year-old Mr.Tiwari was the Chief Minister of Uttaranchal (now Uttarakhand) from 2002 till early this year, when the Congress lost power. A post-graduate from Allahabad University and also a law graduate, Mr. Tiwari was the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh on four occasions in 1976, 1984, 1986 and 1988. He was elected to the UP Legislative Assembly a record number of nine times since his maiden entry in 1952 as a Praja Samajwadi Party nominee.

In his long political career, Mr. Tiwari was elected to the seventh Lok Sabha in 1980. The same year, he was appointed Union Minister for Planning.

He went on to become the Vice-Chairman of the Planning Commission.

He served as the Union Minister for Industry, External Affairs, Finance and Commerce.

Mr. Tiwari was nominated to the Congress Working Committee in 1993 and later made president of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee in 1994.

A widely travelled man, Mr. Tiwari participated in the freedom struggle and was jailed for 15 months.
