KOTTAYAM: Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has stoutly defended the stand taken by the CPI(M) on the prospective civilian nuclear agreement with the United States and said this was the latest in a series of interventions the Left had made during its three-year association with the United Progressive Alliance (UPA). “Many things can happen in the coming weeks if the UPA government does not correct its mistake,” the Chief Minister said, speaking at a public meeting organised in connection with the inauguration of the newly built district headquarters of the party here on Sunday. The support extended by the Left to ensure stability for the government was based on a clear programme of action delineated in the Common Minimum Programme. On issues such as privatisation of the public sector, foreign direct investment, liberalisation of the insurance sector, the Left had intervened and criticised the government both inside Parliament and outside. The Left had shown extraordinary restraint against the stand taken by the government on such deviations, he said.
